Chapter 17

It had been years since Tomas saw Alpha Barticus and his mate Amynta. Asia, their daughter and Mistress’ best friend, looked so much like her ma’am; Tomas smiled and prepared for the show. She did not look pleased.

“Alpha Barticus is here, sir,” Tomas told La Patron.

“He just told me. He’s not happy. Pull your people back, but don’t leave in case he wants to talk to you,” La Patron said.

Barticus looked at the growing crowd. His pack. They came to see him. The taste of failure burned his tongue. None of the other packs suffered like Rome. Moving forward, he placed his hand on Regine’s shoulder and stared into his gaze. Tears rolled down Regine’s cheek as Barticus learned of the horrible things the full-blood did to his people. Pain and embarrassment made a humbling cocktail. That La Patron’s new alpha discovered all this made it worse. He looked around and nodded at Tomas.

Tomas nodded.

“It’s good to see so many of you here. I have several questions and must correct several things. If you live on Pack lands, we’ll see you when my mate and I visit this week. We intend to address all of your concerns. Each and every one. That doesn’t mean you’ll get everything you want, but we’ll hear you.”

They cheered.

“Where are the pups?” he asked Tomas.

Tomas opened the door and extended his hand. Aurora took it and stepped out.

“Greetings, Alpha Tomas, your mate Aurora, and your pups,” Barticus and Amynta said while their pack watched.

Leo, his siblings, and Sherry stepped out and stood near Aurora. Amynta moved close and hugged each. “I’m so sorry for what happened to you. We love and take care of all the pups in our pack. None should ever be hungry, dressed in rags, or live in fear on the streets. As the mate of Alpha Barticus, you have my word and promise this will never happen to anyone again. Please forgive us.”

Tears filled Leo and Dickens’ eyes as they hugged her again. Benson and Malfry joined in. Sherry wiped the tears from her eyes, but held Aurora’s hand.

Ryder’s mate gasped.

They looked at her as tears filled her eyes. “You’re alive. I thought they killed you.” She moved closer and hugged the pups. “I’m so glad you’re alive.”

“Don’t cry. We’re living with Alpha Tomas and Ma’am now,” Leo whispered. “They’re taking good care of us.”

Sniffing, she smiled. “Always acting so grown up. Now you can be a little boy.”

“I’m a pup, not a boy.” Leo pointed to his chest.

“Sure you are.” She laughed as Ryder assisted her to her feet and moved her from the crowd. He’d shown remarkable restraint around so many. Tomas wasn’t surprised when they sat alone in the SUV.

“And another one bites the dust,” Ryan quipped as he moved to stand near the vehicle with his twin.

“Must be something in the air,” Tomas pulled Aurora close while Barticus spoke to his people.

“Are we staying another day? I don’t think Ryder will leave, but I don’t like the idea of him staying this close to the human’s power base.
